##### MidTerm / Re: MT Problem 2b
« on: March 06, 2013, 11:12:38 PM »
By inspection, $y = 1/2$ is a solution.

Darn, why did I not see this...
Just goes to show that slowing down during a test and looking at the question with a calm mind can do wonders
I also did not see this during the test. Is there anyone who did?

The hint led me to do variation right away...

The method of undetermined coefficient applies because it only "requires us to make an initial assumption about the form of the particular solution, but with the coefficients left unspecified" (Textbook 10th Edition P.177).

If t = 0, we have, 2y = 0. => y = 0 is the solution for t = 0.

##### MAT 244 Misc / Additional problems to 4.4

In the announcement it says "due Feb. 26". I am confused. Does this mean we have to hand something in?

1. those people clearly did not mean numerical computations. We can tell by the context even if the use of the term was not the most correct. If it were numerical computations we would be writing algorithms instead of doing them by hand.

2.we did not discuss much about coordinate change or symmetry so far in this course other than straight calculations. so i wouldn't think that we are responsible for what the course was not intended for or what was never mentioned.

3. for math journals, although things are complicated they obviously did't have 45 minutes to write the journal in the exam center with other people staring down at them and counting down time under pressure.

and it would be reasonable to give students more time than what the professor needs to solve the questions since the professor is more experienced and better in the material while students are new to this and learning it for the first time.

##### MAT 244 Misc / Equal Quiz Time for All Sections
« on: February 13, 2013, 11:50:24 PM »
I have noticed that Prof. Pierre Milman's class has 30 minutes for the quizzes and he also gives quiz reviews hints about what is gonna be covered.  On the other hand, Prof. Hoell's class doesn't get reviews or hints and only has 20 minutes to the quizzes.

Can we have both have 30 minutes so all sections have the same amount time from now on?
