The direction doesn’t matter and as a result, the absolute value of a number is never negative. e.g. ▪ The absolute value of 5 is 5. ▪ The absolute value of 5 is 5. ▪ Note: 5 is 5 units to the right of 0. ▪ Note: -5 is 5 units to the left of 0. ▪ The symbol for absolute value consists of two vertical line segments that appear on either side of the number or expression. e.g. (i) 5 means the absolute value of 5, which is equal to 5. At that time we worked with the following ideas. ▪ If we raise a number to a positive integer power we multiply it by itself that 3 number of times. For example, 5 to the power 3 is 5 which is equal to 2 5 x 5 x 5 = 125 or 7 to the power 2 is 7 which is equal to 7 x 7 = 49 ▪ On the other hand, when we go in the opposite direction, instead of raising a number to a power, we find the root of a number. For example the second or square root of 16 is 4 since 4 is one of its two equal factors. Or the third or cube root of 27 is 3 because it is one of its three equal factors. ▪ We use the radical sign to represent the root of a number. The number under the radical sign is called the radicand and the root is called the index.
